       Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) is a job profile with high dignity and a great sense of responsibility. An Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) is basically a person licensed to certify the aircraft or its component for its airworthiness before its release to service. In other words, an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer carry out and certify overhaul, major repairs of aircraft, power plants, components and accessories thereof before its release to service in accordance with the national & international aviation standards. All the Airlines, Maintenance & repair organizations, flying clubs, etc. appoint these AMEs for the certification of their aircrafts and its components as per the Government Rules and Regulations. In terms of employment opportunities, the aircraft maintenance engineering is probably the most promising profession in the aviation sector.

        ”The duty of an AME is to ensure that the Aircraft is in a fit to fly condition before it takes off from the ground. As per the rules laid down by the govt. of India". No aircraft can take off without the certification from qualified Maintenance Engineers.To become an AME one has to undergo AME course from a DGCA approved Institute. These recognized institution teach & train the individuals approved syllabus of DGCA & conduct internal examinations for completion of the course. All AME institutes are allotted limited no. of seats in the categories B1(Mechanical) and B2(Avionics). No AME institutes can induct more students than that allotted by DGCA. Aspiring Aircraft Maintenance Engineers who have obtained the licence can start working with private/ government airlines.        The Students, who dream to be a successful AME & ultimately achieve their goal, may join AME training Institutes. Like other Institutes/colleges under various regulatory bodies viz. Merely completion of AME course will not fetch the students any licence or degree/diploma. ➤ Job & Responsibilities of an AME -

Before flight take off, it is the responsibility of licensed AME to troubleshoot the problem of the aircrafts. 

➤ AME Course Eligibility & Criteria -

   Engineering aspirants who aim to pursue the AME course must fulfil the following eligibility criteria:

  • Candidates should pass 10+2 Board exam with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM) or equivalent AICTE approved 3-years engineering diploma in any stream or any higher qualification in science with PCM at the time of admission.

  • Candidates who are eligible for admission in B.Tech Courses are also eligible for Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Course.

  • Candidates' age should be between 16 to 28 years at the time of admission.

  • Candidate must not have colour blindness and any physical disabilities.

➤ AME Course Duration -

    The duration of Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Course is of 4 years which includes 2 years academic program and 2 years practical training. The academic knowledge will be gathered at DGCA approved AME institute and live training will be held in flying environment such as Airlines, MRO, etc. At the time of training, student will get the stipend. After clearing the modules and practical training license will be issued by DGCA. The licensed AME can work in private or government sector in India and Abroad.

➤ AME Course Streams -

   AME Course Streams are classified into two categories:-

  • A:- A is the license for the engineer who can maintain, repair, and troubleshoot the simple defect of an aircraft.

    • A1:- A1 license holder solve the simple defect in aeroplane with jet engine.

    • A2:- A2 license holder rectify and repair the simple defect in aeroplane with piston engine.

    • A3:- A3 licensed AME maintain, repair, and solve the simple defect in helicopter with jet engine.

    • A4:- A4 licensed AME maintain, repair, and solve the simple defect in helicopter with piston engine.

  • B1:- B1 is the license for mechanical stream in aircrafts. The mechanical stream is related to the components such as Fuselage, Landing Gear, and Wings etc. This license have further divided in the following categories:-

    • B1.1:- License B1.1 certifies the aeroplanes with Jet Engine.

    • B1.2:- License B1.2 certifies the aeroplanes with Piston Engine.

    • B1.3:- License B1.3 certifies the helicopters with Jet Engine.

    • B1.4:- License B1.4 certifies the helicopters with Piston Engine.

  • B2:- B2 is the license for avionics stream in aircrafts. The avionics stream is related to the electronics system. This license can be attained in following categories:-

    • Electrical System

    • Instrumental System

    • Radio Navigation and Communication

➤ AME Course Syllabus -

      AME Course is 4 year license program in which candidate has to undergo 2 year academic program and 2 years training in flying environment. In this 2 year academic program, candidate studies about theoretical and practical knowledge of aircraft engineering, principals and components. There are 17 modules by DGCA, Govt of India. The candidate has to choose stream, modules are depends upon the stream of candidate. Candidate has to clear modules to achieve the AME License. Module 1 and 2 are not applicable in India.

AME License Eligibility -

       Completion of Course (COC) - After completion of 2 years academic in the Aircraft Maintenance Engineering institutes. The candidate gets the C of R. Any AME institute in India is approved by DGCA. DGCA is the Indian body which is under the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

      Modules - Modules are conducted by DGCA, Govt of India. There is a total of 17 modules according to DGCA, but candidates have to clear the module in accordance with the stream they have chosen. It is mandatory for the candidate to clear the modules.

      Experience – The entire Aircraft Maintenance Engineering course is of 4 years. In starting two years, there will be an academic program, and the remaining two years there will be training in the flying environment. The knowledge gain at the time of training will be considered as experience while applying for AME license.

Process To Get AME License -

     To get COC (Completion of Course) Certificate, a candidate has to undergo 2 year academic programme in DGCA, Govt of India, approved AME institutes. In this 2 year programme, a candidate will get theoretical knowledge and practical training of aircraft. After successful completion of 2 years academic program, a candidate will achieve a C of R Certificate.

       In this 2 years academic programme, there are some modules which candidates have to clear. DGCA Govt of India will conduct the modules examination.

     There will be 2 years of industrial training on the live environment in which candidate gets knowledge with a stipend.

       After that, the eligible Aircraft Maintenance Engineer will get an AME License as per DGCA norms.
