The renovated old terminal building at Pune Airport is almost ready to welcome passengers again, with the facility now awaiting the final security clearance from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS).
The upgraded terminal was recently inspected by Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol, who reviewed the newly developed check-in and security-hold areas. According to officials, most of the required procedures have been completed and the terminal can become operational once BCAS grants its approval.
New Facilities Added for Passengers
The redevelopment covers approximately 4,075 square metres and has been designed to improve passenger movement and reduce congestion during busy periods.
The renovated terminal includes:
– 14 CUTE-enabled check-in counters
– 2 regular XBIS baggage screening machines
– 1 random-check XBIS unit
– 4 additional XBIS machines in the security-check area
– 8 door-frame metal detectors
– Two new boarding gates — 6A and 6B
– New retail and food-and-beverage facilities
The improvements are expected to provide additional handling capacity and make the passenger journey more efficient from check-in through boarding.
BCAS Approval Is the Final Step
Pune Airport has witnessed a steady rise in passenger traffic, putting considerable pressure on the existing terminal, particularly during peak hours. The redevelopment of the old terminal is intended to ease this pressure and provide passengers with improved facilities.
Mohol said the renovation work has been completed and directions have been issued to expedite the required BCAS clearance.
Once the security approval is received, the renovated terminal is expected to open for public use shortly.
More Capacity for Pune Airport
The reopening of the upgraded terminal is expected to be an important step in addressing Pune Airport’s growing passenger demand. Additional check-in, baggage-screening and boarding facilities should help improve airport operations during high-traffic periods.
Passengers will have to wait for the final BCAS approval before the terminal officially begins operations.
